Are horror movies scarier when you can't see the monster (be it a ghost or whatever)?
Are there any examples where this works well? Or, do you have any examples of movies where it's got scarier once the monster's on screen?

One of the old Amityville Horror movies might be an example, though I can't say I've seen them. I've only seen the latest edition, but that's where they showed the ghosts and Kreacher.

I've had the new version on UMD for my PSP for ages, but I still haven't watched it. I think I managed to pick it up for about £3 - bargain! I might see if I have time to watch it over the weekend.

A good example of this was Poltergeist. You never really got to see what was beyond the door but it scared the shit out of me as a kid.
