Ok, I'm making this up as I go along... so bear with me! lol
Sarah worked in a cafe in a South London town called Croydon. This town wasn't pretty by any stretch of the imagination - the fact that it was known by many as the "arsehole of London" should give anyone a good idea of what it was like. Litter covered the streets, gangs hid around every corner and graffitti climbed every available wall. It wasn't pretty, but it was home. Sarah's home.
She didn't mind working at the cafe. The money wasn't brilliant, but the days passed quickly and mostly without incident. In fact, the worst trouble she usually got was from the college kids who tried to chat her up. Sarah wasn't classically good-looking, but she had the kind of open face and beautiful eyes that always attracted attention. Her dress sense also raised a few eyebrows - she was obsessed (to an almost unhealthy degree) with vampires. She guessed that she had Anne Rice to blame for that. Because of this she often received invitations of a bizarre nature, from men who thought that she would be wild in bed (whether she was or not was always left to their imagination). Most days she didn't mind the attention, but sometimes it did get annoying - especially when people wouldn't take 'no' for answer.
One Wednesday the manager, Billy, gave Sarah the keys to lock up. She had never been given this much responsibility before and took up the challenge gamely. If she did well maybe Billy would give her a pay rise and if the pay rise would good enough maybe she could afford to go to a music festival that summer. Her friends went every year and, due to a lack of funds, Sarah always got left behind. The idea of a little more money put a spring in her step for the rest of the day.
In the blink of an eye closing time arrived. The customers left and the other staff started making their way home. Sarah cashed up and walked around the cafe making sure that everything was tidy and all of the appliances were turned off. As she stood outside locking the last of the padlocks she had a feeling that someone was watching her. She looked around expecting to see a gang of kids or a couple on their way to a bar, but there was no-one. This struck her as strange. People were always passing through here - even when the cafe was closed - because this road led them directly to the area of Croydon that had all of the night-life. So where was everyone? Sarah started to feel nervous - she wasn't keen on walking around these streets on her own at the best of times, but tonight was even worse. Those invisible eyes were still looking her... but she still didn't know who was watching her. Every nerve in her body was on edge. She knew that she would jump at the slightest sound.
Sarah took a few deep breaths and started to make her way to the bus stop. She could see it from where she was and that made her feel a little more safe. All she had to do was get there. As she moved further away from the cafe the feeling that she was being watched intensified. She kept looking over her shoulder, only to see no-one. When she turned back she was face to face with a man.
"Erm... Hi..." Sarah was scared out of her mind, but she didn't want her new companion to know that. Somehow she thought that if she could engage him with light conversation everything would be alright.
"Hi Sarah" the man replied, smiling. At this point Sarah recognised him - he was a customer from the cafe. She searched her brain for his name. Was it Alex?
"How are you, Alex?" She really hoped it was his name.
"All the better for seeing you. I hear you're into vampires." That smile was still there. It wasn't a friendly smile - it was more creepy than anything else.
"Erm... yes... I... er... well, I read novels" she replied weakly. She looked over Alex's shoulder and saw her bus at the bus stop, then she saw it move away. There would be another one in 15 minutes, but she didn't really want to be stuck with this man until then. Alex managed to establish eye contact again.
"Then you're very lucky that you invited me."
"I invited you? To what?" Sarah was confused and getting more frightened by the second.
"When you were reading aloud. You must realise that vampires have to be invited, right? I could be your Lestat."
Sarah suddenly realised what he was talking about - she had read a passage from one of her books to her colleague who wanted to know what it was about. Alex couldn't be serious, could he? Was he really a vampire?
As she was thinking Alex started to change. His canine teeth grew into fangs and his eyes blackened. It was like looking into the eyes of a Great White Shark - they were deep, yet dead looking. Sarah couldn't look anywhere else. Her dream was finally going to come true - she was going to live forever and become a creature of the night.
Alex lunged at her. He dug his long nails through her shirt sleeves and hooked them into the skin of her arms. She felt them rip through muscle and she screamed. He used his teeth to tear open her throat - blood squirted everywhere and Alex started to drink. Sarah realised that she was dying. She would never be immortal and vampires weren't the romantic beings that she'd read about. Alex started biting chunks of flesh from her body and gulping them down greedily.
"This isn't what I had in mind." Sarah said before she slipped into oblivion.
The next day the authorities found the bodies of all the cafe staff and some of the regulars. They were all in the same state - drained of blood and partly dismembered. It looked like a wild animal had snacked on them.
Rumour has it that Alex still prowls the streets of Croydon. The cafe has re-opened under new management and he still likes to have the odd coffee in there. He's grateful that people believe that vampires can't come out in the daylight. Many people - old and young, male and female - have disappeared from that area since that fateful night. Some have reappeared as grotesque corpses, while others were never seen again.
