After having seen I.C.O.N at The Gaff earlier in the year, I was very keen to hear this album. I thought they put on a superb show at that gig, and I was pleased to find out that my slightly intoxicated ears were not deceiving me...
I've been thinking about how to descibe I.C.O.N's music, and I found it surprisingly difficult. The easy thing to do would be to describe it as Traditional Metal, but part of me wants to call it Biker Metal. Have I just invented a sub-genre there? Who knows.. probably not, there's probably a billion bands out there playing under that banner, but hey. So, why Biker Metal? I suppose I could also call it Beer Metal as it also conjures up the same sort of imagery. When I listen to this album I think of beer, leathers, denim, long hair and motorbikes.... and that's gotta be a good thing!
The tracks on "New Born Lie" sound fresh, but they still have their roots firmly planted in Metal's history and that lends a certain nostagia to the listening experience. I.C.O.N seem to be able to take the best bits of their favourite bands (there's touches of Motorhead, Corrosion of Conformity, etc are all lurking in the songs somewhere) and twist it into something of their own.
"New Born Lie" is (just over) half an hour of superb Metal. Stand out tracks for me were "Messiah Complex", "Prizefighter" and "New Born Lie".
Track List
01 Cold Divide
02 Inside The Out
03 Seven Second Warning
04 Ultraviolet
05 Messiah Complex
06 Shotgun Karma
07 Prizefighter
08 New Born Lie
