I thought it was about time that I actually got around to reviewing at least one of the many albums and EPs that I've got laying around waiting for me to do something with them. I've decided to begin this slightly epic task with a demo by a little-known band that goes by the name of A Dead God.
A Dead God are yet another band that has found it's way through my ear drums and into the dirty little corners of my mind because of that MySpace thing. I'm not complaining, I just thought I'd give you a little bit of background...
Anyway, the demo is comprised of four tracks of unashamably good atmospheric Black Metal. Listening to this demo, I get the feeling that A Dead God have invited me into their blistering cold and dark alternate reality and left me to fight my own demons while they provide the soundtrack. So, do I like it? You bet your corpsepaint I do!
The demo begins with "Unleash Thyself", which is track that sets the tone wonderfully. The production isn't perfect, but sometimes I feel that Black Metal actually benefits from less-than-perfect production. With that said though, I would have preferred a slightly fuller sound. But, hey, we can't have everything... All in all, this is a track that mixes almost subliminal melodies with a harsh and desolate landscape. The way I've described it may appear to be soul destroying, but there's just something so damn addictive about it. "To Wonder Among The Stars" definitely takes that addictive factor onto the next level and has quickly become my favourite from this selection of tracks. I find it difficult to pinpoint the one thing that has lifted this track above the others for me, but I still find myself listening to it more than the others. The near-Classical melodies might have something to do with it.
"Eternal Gloom" seems to be more 'in your face' in comparision to the previous track. While it does appear to show a more brutal side to A Dead God, this is still unmistakably the same band. I feel I should mention something about how professional this songs are... I'm not talking about the production, but the composition - the way they've been put together. You get the feeling that the all of the band members have a very good idea on how the band should sound and what they need to do in order to achieve this goal. Just have a listen to this track to get some kind of understanding. It starts off on a relatively brutal path, then (at about half way through), it's slowed down to something far more atmospheric. The demo ends on a track called "Forever Torment". This track closes things perfectly. With this demo, A Dead God have proved to the world what they are capable of and now I have very high hopes for them in the future.
Thought-provoking Black Metal that is highly recommended.
