I know i can't enter the comp but here is something i just wrote:
The Beginning...
It was an average day, a Friday. With the weekend just around the corner, Ray was in a better than average mood. It was just like any other morning except the weather was unusually tepid and the sky was blue. Unusual because it was the middle of winter. You could almost mistake this as a mid summers day. "Unusually good weather were having love", Ray said to his wife as she packed his work bag just like every other day. "Yeah, it is. Have you got everything?" she replied as she scurried around the kitchen preparing the final parts to the daily ritual. "I think so. Well im late, i've got to go!" said Ray as his work mate confidently entered the kitchen door and took the last of Ray's toast, "C'mon Ray, the sewer awaits no man. Them turds are back logging mate and we are needed!", Jimbo said jokingly. You see, Ray and Jimbo worked for the local council as maintenance workers. "See ya Linda, i'll have him back in one peice...Aye Aye enough of that!", Jimbo muttered as Ray gave his wife a peck on the cheek.
As Ray turned to close the door he had the strangest feeling, looking back at Linda he felt as everything had gone into slow motion, a kind of trans like state. Linda looked back at Ray with a simular fearful look on her face. They were connected not physically, rather through their 23 years of knowing each other. You become one, your thoughts and feelings melded. "Bye love", Ray said as he pulled the door shut for what would be the last time. Linda just gazed with that horrid look embedded on her face. Ray stood their with a raised eye brow and a dumbfounded look on his face, with a wry grin he shrugged it off and got on with his day.
The Onset...
"Aye, Ray whats on for the day?", Jimbo said as Ray sat in the passenger side of the work truck looking through the work schedule. "Well, looks like we got the big one! Demons drain, its got some sort of minor leak in the wall that needs repairing.", Ray said in a disturbed sort of way. Jimbo sat up rigidly with a none to happy attitude saying, "sh*t i hate going down that bastard place! Tom's crew had to do an inspection down there a couple of weeks ago, they all say they saw something down there! Everyone says it. I knew i should have pulled a sickie today." Demons drain was so named because of the many sightings by workers of an unusual figure resembling a demon in stature. A terrible feeling came over Ray, "Yeah i'm not thrilled about going down their either. Lets get in there get it done and get out!", he said. When they arrived they set up the safety equipment then started the long descent to the bottom of the fast flowing drain.
Flash lights blazing the two men reached the 130 foot climb down the fixed ladder to finally touch bottom. "You know, theres no quick way out of here but if i see anything move i'm leaving you for dead Ray.', said Jimbo. Just as he uttered his words, "Jesus @#!*ing christ, what was that!" Jimbo yelled. The noise was an evil squelching, intensified by the enclosed drain. Ray frantically flashed the torch from side to side, not knowing where to point it! "I had a bad feeling about today. My wife, i can't die now, jesus, its not my time.", said Ray with more than a hint of pannick in his voice. "The radio, you got it?", asked Jimbo. "Have you got it, Ray.", he yelled a second time. Jimbo turned and pointed his flash light on Ray's face, only to see Ray standing tight against the wall of the man hole, staring directly into the darkness with the most terrifying look on his face. "The dark, i hate the dark, whats in the dark?.", Ray said crazilly. "Get it together Ray! Lets quietly climb the steps and get out of here. Ok mate?", Jimbo said in a reassuring voice. After a brief hesitation, still staring deep in the dark Ray replied "Yeah...Yeah...Ok lets go." Jimbo let Ray go first, Ray was slow, maybe this is what Ray's earlier premonition meant? He could hardly move his legs as if he were in slow motion, they were heavy and felt as though someone was holding him back. Ray got about a quater of the way up the stairs, looking up to the light from the man hole opening, it looked like the gates of heaven, there saviour above and darknes of hell below. Ray looked down toward the darkness, he couldn't see Jimbo "Are you there Jimbo...Jimbo...come on Jimbo.", he whispered in a forceful way. He had a decision to make, head for the safety of the light above, no there was no decision. He set upon slowly scaling back down the ladder. He saw his mate, in relief he sighed "Come on, what are you waiting for? What the...JESUS, oh no, not my mate, you killed my mate!" Jimbo glared up at Ray with his safety harness the only thing holding him from falling into the fast flowing waters below, his eyes were wide open without an ounce of life in them. Ray briefly gave upto to his emotions before agonisingly making his way to the top. He wynched his dead mate up to ground level. He cried with his friend in his arms for minutes. He looked up to the skies "Why, would you do this." he said in angst.
The Underworld...
Ray noticed things were very different above ground, it was cold and the sun had all but deminished behind the thick black clouds. He carefully lay his dead mates head on the ground. Standing looking skyward he could see a gaping hole in the clouds directly over his beloved township. The hole seemed to be twirling in motion and sucking downward toward the ground. What was going on he thought, he chuckled with a tinge of madness. "It's a bad dream, thats all, it's a bad dream.", he said to himself. He looked around to where his mate layed lifeless only a minute or two ago, he was gone! Impossible, Ray had checked his pulse, he was dead, Jimbo's injuries were horific and his lower limbs were mangled. If he were alive why would he just vanish without so much as a yelp? Puzzled, Ray went to the work truck to radio into base. "Hello base, we need urgent help out here! We are out at Demons drain, somethings happened to Jimbo, send help!", he said. He must have called in for a good 15 minutes with no reply. After a quick check of the immediate area, he could not see Jimbo, besides he was growing ever more worried about what was going on in town. He got in the truck and sped as quick as the truck would go. He reached the town hub where things got even stranger. With not a person in sight he entered a few shops only to find no one inside. He could visibly see this upside down tornado like hole much more clearly from his closer position. It was massive and looked like it had burst from the ground upwards, destroying alot of the towns center. It was strangly calm, infact way to calm for any type of natural phenomena. He stood only metres away from this raging localised storm and couldn't feel so much as a breath of wind. In absolute confusion Ray managed to find his way home to find the same thing as in town, not a child playing on the street, no cars driving on the roads, no dogs, cats or even birds in the sky to be seen! Even his wife seemed to have vanished without a trace.
The Truth...
Ray fell to his knees, begging to know, to understand what was happening to him. Whether he would ever see his wife again. He wandered from town to town only to find the same things, eternal darkness with not a soul insight, the same gaping hole over every town! Ray didn't understand that these were the portals to hell only visible after death. Time stood still for Ray, he was in limbo. Ray didn't belong in hell, he just had unanswered questions that he needed answered and he would remain a lost soul until they were. What had really happened down that hole?
Jimbo was less fortunate, his sudden depararture was a surity that he was taken. With all his good deeds and caring nature, it wasn't enough! A stark reminder that hell is what we most fear in life and becomes you in death.
The End...
