Despite Nikki Sixx's work with Sixx A.M, Motley Crue are back with their original line-up. I bought this album out of a strange sense of loyalty to the band. The truth is that Motley Crue can be very very good, but they can also be shockingly bad. Some albums are bloody brilliant, while others leave a lot to be desired. So, buying "Saints Of Los Angeles" was like playing roulette. I was either going to get something that I could feel proud to own, or something that would end up gathering dust on my CD shelf.... So, which is it?
This album is definitely Motley Crue - there's no doubt about that. All of the key elements are still here... including Vince Neil's vocals. Now, I'll have to be honest with you - Vince Neil's (nasally) vocals were always the reason why I always considered Motley Crue to be a good band, but they never reached the dizzy heights of being one of my favourites. The nasally tones are still here on this album, but the songs are at a lively enough tempo so that they never seem out of their depth. In fact, this album never really lets up and lets you take a breather. Even on my very first listen I found myself singing along (it's amazing how quickly you can pick up the lyrics).
Speaking of lyrics, there's nothing too deep here. The Crue aren't here to change the world or save civilisation. Thankfully they're just here to share some memories about their rise to fame, nights at the Whisky and various acts of debauchery... and that's why we love them.
Highlights from this album include: "Down At The Whisky", "Chicks = Trouble", "This Ain't A Love Song" (not to be confused with the Bon Jovi song of the same name - I can assure you that they're very different!), "Just Another Psycho" and "Goin' Out Swingin'".
